8 Things to Do in Gozo While on Holiday

villages in gozo

Guest Post by Elena Prokopets

Gozo is a charming island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea in Europe, forming part of the Maltese archipelago, i.e the country of Malta. The island of Gozo has around 37,000 inhabitants with an area of 67 square kilometers and has been inhabited for thousands of years.

When setting foot for the first time on the island, one can notice that Gozo is filled with nature, beaches and historical landmarks. It seems that life stood still on the island. The old village traditions are very much alive as they were 50 years ago. Every year, each village has the typical village ‘festa’ dedicated to its patron Saint, which lasts 3 days. Bands march through the streets of the village, and people can enjoy the fireworks that light up the skies, colorful street decorations, and local street food.

A world-famous destination for all daring beach lovers, Gozo is more than a diving site. If you are a photographer, food lover or just a traveler, there are plenty of things to do in Gozo.  Here are the top 8 things to do for having a great time at Gozo.

8 Things to Do in Gozo While on Holiday

1.) Travel on Quad Bikes

Although you can rent a bike, a jeep or travel on foot when you are on a holiday in Gozo, exploring the place on a quad bike is a different experience. This helps you discover more in less time. A quad bike can take you to those parts where you are unable to make it by an ordinary car or even a jeep.

2.) Enjoy the Azure Window (**Update: The Azure Window is no longer there.)

The Azure Window offers one of the world’s stunning views, regardless of the weather. Don’t forget to take your camera to take memorable pictures in the area right in front of the Azure Window. You can find even prettier locations if you wander a bit.

3.) Stay in a Farmhouse

For experiencing the true essence of Gozo, going for a farmhouse over a hotel is a wise choice. The surroundings will offer the best atmosphere that is typical of Gozo. Several farmhouses in the vicinity offer a lavish accommodation experience no less than a five-star hotel. Almost all farmhouses are equipped with in-ground pools, private suites and huge bedrooms with all necessary amenities.

4.) Plan a Visit to Calypso’s Cave

The Calypso’s cave is believed to be 2,700-year-olds. Famous for being mentioned in Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, you can enjoy stunningly beautiful views from the cave over the red sands of Ramla Bay.

5.) Spend Time in Ghasri and Xlendi

Travelers find the unique places of Xlendi and Gharsi both exquisite and magical. The clear waters of Gharsi lead out to the open sea. Moreover, swimming in the sandy shallow waters close to several restaurants in Xlendi will surely be a memorable experience. There are also snorkeling and diving opportunities available when you head to the deeper parts of the beach. You also have the option to rent a paddleboat or a kayak to explore the areas.

6.) Savor a Lunch at Maxokk

No trip to Gozo is complete without a lunch of Ftira from Maxokk. Being Gozo’s exclusive bakery, it offers the best Gozitan ftira, which is a special type of bread filled with tuna, capers and olives.

7.) Shop at Ta’Dbiegi Crafts Village

You can either take classes or simply shop from the talented Gozitan artists. Live demonstrations are also on offer. Many travelers purchase skillfully crafted souvenirs, including Gozitan lace, pottery handblown glass and more. The Gozo Pottery Barn offers short classes for interested visitors.

8.) Try a Fish Dinner at Marsalforn

Marsalforn is a village on the north coast of Gozo and boasts Malta’s best fish cuisines. Travelers hardly forget the taste of a freshly caught fish served at any of the exotic restaurants in the village. There is a whole host of restaurants in Marsalforn that are known for traditional fish dishes.
