Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone

Devil plus dress

“Curve-hugging” and “mini dress” are usually two descriptions that send me running for safety when I’m clothes shopping! I am just not comfortable wearing that type of dress…and I am not really a fan of having every, ah, “curve” on my body displayed. I’m not hating on my body here (or this type of dress), but fit and flare dresses are my go-to…and generally what I feel to be the most “me.” However, every once in a while, I just have to step out of my comfort zone and try something a little different for a change.

So, I present to you my curve-hugging, mini dress! Haha. The description on the website describes it as a mini dress (which made me REALLY nervous), but I felt like this dress was an appropriate length. I wasn’t all that worried about wardrobe malfunctions while I wore it. It’s surprisingly comfortable for a tight dress, too. I was pleasantly surprised by that! I had worn this dress for a nice dinner with my husband, and the restaurant we were going to was about a 10-15 minute walk from where we live. This dress and my pumps were both comfortable enough for that journey. I also liked how the back of the dress was open, but I was still able to wear a normal bra with it.

My only complaint about this dress was that the gold pattern wasn’t completely attached to the dress. (Which was a bit odd looking.) I tried to iron it down, but it didn’t do much..and it still was sticking out at times. (You can kind of see it in the photo where I have a derpy look on my face, but I’m turned sideways, below.) And this is also a bit minor compared to my past product photo snafu, but still worth noting…the gold portion of the dress doesn’t look exactly like the product photo in person. It’s a bit shinier and more gold looking. Just an FYI.

This outfit was also worn for some serious Pokémon Go hunting on my way home from the restaurant, haha. We FINALLY have Pokémon Go, and my husband and I are having so much fun! It makes me so happy to be wandering and see other people, of all ages, smiling to themselves or high-fiving their friends as they catch Pokémon. I also loved seeing girls (like myself) dressed for a night out, in high heels and dresses, catching Pokémon as they walked to their restaurant/club/bar/wherever. It’s a magical thing this Pokémon Go, haha. (As long as you don’t Pokémon Go and drive for goodness sakes!!)

It’s fun to try new styles now and again! And I really liked wearing this dress…but I don’t think I’ll be making a habit of wearing this fit on a daily basis. 🙂 I just like my vintage-inspired, midi-length, fit and flare stuff too much. 🙂 What kind of outfit would be stepping out of your comfort zone? Let me know in the comments!

  1. You look AMAZING in this dress. Like you definitely pull it off. You are stunning, and the dress is such a nice rich colour, and it looks great for a night out.
I’m the same, the curve hugging is not really my thing… I feel “naked” in it, like too much of me is showing. haha
Great fun that you wore that and played Pokémon Go! haha 😀
    Much love,
    Mona

    1. Oh gosh, you’re making me blush, Mona! Thank you so much! And yes, I completely understand the naked feeling…I think I even had dreams (nightmares I guess, haha) after wearing it that I was walking down the street naked. Haha. But it was fun to wear for a change! And Pokémon Go is so much fun! Glad you’re enjoying it too. 🙂

  2. Gorgeous girl! I loved the dress and heels, you look very beautiful! I am like you, not my kind of favorite style – the body-hugging – but sometime I wear it, it depends on the mood 🙂 Bad that the golden part was not working; nevertheless, it looks great! Pokemon Go, well done! It’s funny!

    1. Aw, thank you, Denise! Haha, it depends on my mood too! 🙂 And Pokemon Go is just too much fun! 😉

  3. Gorgeous! But I totally hear you…I’ve recently gotten more into body hugging dresses as well. I mean, I was in to them years ago, and then I stopped, but now I’m back at it. It’s so interesting how fashion is fluid and how we need to adjust our mindset sometimes! You look awesome, for what it’s worth! XO

    1. Thank you so much, Lauren! It is funny how our mindset changes sometimes! I was into more bodycon type dresses about 5 years ago too. And thank you! I am loving the dresses you are featuring as well! 🙂

  4. Love this outfit. looks great on you. It’s good to step out of our comfort zone and try out new things. Sometimes you find amazing things you haven’t thought of only by trying different stuff 🙂

  5. Wow! What a stunning dress! Reminds me of the midnight sky with twinkling stars. I wouldn’t say its a mini dress either. Its fun to step out of your comfort zone every now and then. So glad you did!

    1. Oh gosh, thank you so much, Amanda! And that is a wonderful description of this dress! I’m glad I tried something new for a change too, it’s fun to try different styles. 🙂

  6. You look so great in this dress! Definitely shows you off in a classy and sophisticated way!

  7. oh my gosh, this dress is gorgeous. I wish I had your curves. I would be living in dresses like this all the time! But I may have found a solution to that thanks to dresstech.net.

I’m so frustrated by the pressures put on women to fit molds. You look great in this fit and there should never be a reason for you to be concerned about wearing something like this. But you are. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong about you being concerned. I just wish we lived in a world where our comfort zones were viewed as things to go beyond rather than live within.

I want to be ok wearing dresses, but I just can’t keep seeing myself as a man wearing a dress and looking silly. I want to wear makeup more often, but I feel so silly and judged sometimes if I’m in public. I don’t want to feel anxious if I’m in the intimates section or at a lingerie store and a salesperson comes up to me. I know most of it is demons in my own mind, but they’re still real. I will slowly overcome some of these. But some of them are other people’s issues being forced on me. It’s hard but I take solace in the fact that you’re breaking out of your comfort zone. It has inspired me to spend one day a week outside of mine. Starting with tomorrow, when I will finally wear these cute ankle pants I bought. (Who would have thought a person would be so concerned about showing a little bit of ankle???)

    1. Thank you so much, Patrick! I have not heard of dresstech.net, I’ll have to check them out!

I guess, first I would like to apologize, I didn’t mean for this post to have the underlying tone that I don’t normally wear these types of dresses because I feel pressure to fit a certain mold. I simply just don’t feel as comfortable wearing them on a regular basis as I do my normal fit and flare dresses and midi length skirts. Those types of outfits just feel more like “me.” I think it’s important to recognize the outfits and styles that make you feel the most comfortable and powerful…but still be able to break out of your norm and try new styles from time to time.

I am so sorry to hear you are dealing with these demons, Patrick. I know everyone has their own demons, and some are definitely harder than others. Overcoming these will certainly take time…and not caring what others think is easier said than done. I would personally recommend giving Shybiker‘s blog a read. There are some very inspiring posts on there I feel you might like! I am so glad this post also inspired you to wear cute ankle pants! I would love to see them!

I hope you have a wonderful day Patrick! Keep in touch! 🙂

  8. Absolutely gorgeous dress and you rock it like a star.

I wouldn’t call that length mini; it’s below the middle of your thigh which makes it quite appropriate for any social situation. To me, mini means above the middle of a thigh.

    1. Aw, thank you so much! And I agree, I wouldn’t call this a mini dress either…I don’t know if I would’ve left the house if it was a true mini dress. Haha!
