10 of the Most Caring Cities in the U.S., According to a New Study
A recent study by WalletHub In order to identify the areas that care the most, WalletHub compared the 100 largest cities across 38 key indicators of a compassionate spirit. Our data set ranges from the share of sheltered homeless people to volunteering hours per capita to the share of income donated to charity.
We’re all guilty of throwing a little shade online, but have you ever gotten virtually yelled at by a troll in the comments section? It’s easy for people to get caught up in their own little worlds. But showing love and care to others can fill your heart with warm fuzzies. When you receive kindness, it can completely turn your day around.
Life can be difficult. Sometimes, it feels like we’re barely keeping our own heads above water. But think about the impact we could make if we all radiate a little more joy. The good news is we don’t have to be rich or perfect to make a difference. There are plenty of ways to show compassion, like giving to charity, working in jobs that help people, and being that neighbor who actually recycles.
We can learn a lot from the top most caring cities in the United States. So, let’s take the lead from these sweet spots of America and start spreading a little more kindness.
Virginia Beach, Virginia
When they say, “Good neighbors make a good living,” Virginia Beach takes it seriously. Locals lead the nation in volunteering hours, and neighbors look out for one another, keeping poverty low and safety high. It’s a peaceful place where even your dog can enjoy life on the city’s dog-friendly beaches.
And talk about generosity! Virginia Beach residents are fundraising champions, constantly supporting charities and searching for ways to give back. It’s proof that this coastal gem isn’t just a great vacation spot—it’s a community that cares.
Scottsdale, Arizona
You’ve probably heard the rumors: “Scottsdale is so expensive!” But it seems like all that money is going to good causes. Scottsdale ranks second in the nation for caring cities, with one of the highest adoption rates and impressively low child poverty levels.
It’s not just about helping kids. Folks here are generous with their time and money, supporting good causes and making the city feel safe and welcoming.
Boston, Massachusetts
Let’s set the record straight—Bostonians might seem gruff, but they’ve got hearts of gold. This city is full of people in caring professions like teaching, social work, and medicine. Boston residents also donate more money online per capita than any other city and rank second in sheltering the homeless and keeping the population insured.
Their compassion extends beyond people—they care deeply about the environment as well. Boston, home to America’s oldest public park, is now the third-most energy-efficient city in the country. That’s true Boston spirit!
Gilbert, Arizona
It’s easy to see why so many people have considered moving to Gilbert. Great homes, clean neighborhoods, good schools, low crime, and it’s just a stone’s throw from Phoenix. Even better, Gilbert is the fourth most caring city in the U.S., ranking second for community care and boasting one of the lowest child poverty rates in the country.
That said, it’s not perfect. While it’s known as a well-off community, Gilbert could do more to address affordable housing and improve access to mental health and treatment for substance abuse. Caring for the workforce still needs work.
Chesapeake, Virginia
Chesapeake is known for being family-friendly to the core—excellent schools, parks, and community centers—which is why it ranks fifth for caring for the community. Plus, businesses love it here, with top-notch opportunities for recruitment and staying competitive in their industries.
The city shines with its hospitality and welcoming neighborhoods. Events like the Chesapeake Jubilee and Wine Festival bring everyone together, creating a strong sense of community. If you’re looking to build lasting relationships and feel connected, this is a great place to start!
Fremont, California
You can say what you want about Fremont, but the community here is tight-knit and constantly growing. The locals are friendly and eager to make everyone feel at home. Many people move here looking for a better future, and they’re almost always met with warmth.
Fremont also shines with the lowest child poverty rate and excellent schools that stay on top of the latest tech. There are tons of volunteer opportunities in health, advocacy, and support for veterans and seniors. It’s easy to get involved and make a difference!
San Diego, California
At first, it may seem like San Diego is falling short, with one of the lowest percentages of income donated to charity. But don’t judge too quickly! You can show you care in so many other ways.
San Diego inspires plenty of affection, primarily through volunteering. It ranks third for caring for the vulnerable, with organizations like 365 Events San Diego connecting nonprofits and corporations. You can also pitch in with Feeding San Diego or lend a hand at one of the city’s 5,100 local farms.
Madison, Wisconsin
Madison often tops the list of best cities to live in, and those stats don’t lie. The people here are friendly, humble, and hardworking, making it the eighth most caring city in the U.S. It’s also a fantastic place to raise a family, with terrific neighborhoods, top schools, and plenty of kid-friendly activities. Plus, the city is known for its rockstar teachers, who take great care of their students’ well-being.
If you’re working in Madison, you’re in a city that cares about its workforce. Organizations like Goodwill of South Central Wisconsin provide strong support for job training, employment, and housing for those in need.
Colorado Springs, Colorado
The best part about living in Colorado Springs is not just the mountains or the weather (though they’re amazing)—it’s the people. This city’s residents shine in creating community. It’s full of fun things to do, like art festivals, farmers markets, and music events. You’ll always feel at home here!
Colorado Springs ranks ninth for caring for the vulnerable, and there are tons of ways to get involved. From neighborhood cleanups to programs like CAPS, you can team up with locals to make a difference. It’s a great way to give back while having fun with friends!
Plano, Texas
Plano is the tenth most caring city, and it definitely deserves that spot. With its friendly people, low crime rates, strong economy, and excellent schools, it ranks eighth for caring for the community and has the fifth-lowest child poverty rate. It’s truly a great place to live!
Despite all the positives, Plano has one of the lowest numbers of residents working in social services. But you can make a difference! Check out Volunteers in Plano (VIP) to explore opportunities to give back and help strengthen this caring community.
