The city that sits on the western edge of Missouri is renowned for its jazz heritage and outdoor dining, which gives you a strong hint about the relaxed and friendly atmosphere that you will be able to enjoy when you come to Kansas City.

Here are some of the top places that should be on your itinerary when you come to this unique and welcoming city.

Enjoy the market

The City Market has been part of Kansas City life since the 1850’s and this is a place to come to if you want to sample some of the local produce and delicacies while also browsing stalls selling all sorts of different items.

There is also often some entertainment going on while the market is open so it is a great starting point for your tour of Kansas City if you want to get a feel for the relaxed vibe here.

Universal appeal

Atkins Art Museum
Nelson-Atkins Art Museum

Next on the list would be the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, which is designed to appeal to a wide audience.

The whimsical giant badminton shuttlecocks that grace the front lawn of the building are bound to raise a smile and with well over 35,000 exhibits to enjoy and free entry thrown into the deal, the Nelson-Atkins is almost certain to impress.

The massive sculpture park in the grounds is also a highlight that ensures you will be able to spend a delightful couple of hours enjoying the indoor and outdoor show.

Head to Westport for entertainment and nightlife

If you are looking for a neighborhood that offers great shopping opportunities during the day and then comes alive in the evening you should head to Westport Square.

The Westport area is at the heart of the city’s nightlife and a couple of venues you might want to try are Ernie Biggs Piano Bar and the Kick Comedy Theater. Or you might decide to stop at any one of many eateries that vary from high-end dining to laid-back grazing.

Enjoy a big sporting occasion

The city plays host to the Major League Baseball team Kansas City Royals and if decide to join the loyal fans for an evening of sporting action you will see how passionate the locals are about their team.

This creates a great atmosphere and a memorable sporting treat as part of your Kansas City experience.

Where it all began

Kansas City Jazz is a distinct style of jazz that was originally developed in the city back in the 1930’s.

Not surprisingly, this rich jazz heritage means that you can find plenty of venues where some of that distinctive toe-tapping music will be filling the room.

Try venues like The Phoenix which offers live music in traditional speakeasy surroundings or maybe head to Chaz on the Plaza for an entertaining dining and music experience.

If you try any or all of these places when you come to Kansas City you will be able to see and feel why the city is famous for looking after its visitors.

Thank you so much for the post, Jane! This was a big help as I am traveling from Argentina to Wisconsin today (and yep, I did leave yesterday – 30 hours of travel is the worst)! I also wanted to let everyone know, I won’t be publishing a post on Monday – Christmas Day. I hope you all have a Merry Christmas if you celebrate, and the blog will be business as usual after Christmas. 🙂
