10 Wardrobe Essentials for a Timeless, Stylish Fall
A switch has flipped inside of me, and I am absolutely over summer. My plan is to write about fall and fall style as much as possible to see if Mother Nature will take the hint. After publishing Monday’s fall-themed post, I did get nearly a 30-degree drop in temps here. So, I just might be on to something…right? Haha.
For this post, I’m sharing 10 clothing items and accessories that I think will be a wonderful addition to anyone’s closet for fall (and even winter). However, these aren’t the trendiest wardrobe essentials you’ll find on store shelves this fall. I’m all about creating a wardrobe that can be used year after year. Some of these things I already own (so I know they’re good), some I just ordered, and others I’m hoping to order soon (budget permitting!). Enjoy!

10 Wardrobe Essentials for a Timeless, Stylish Fall
1.) A Striped Three-Quarter Sleeve Top
This top I just ordered before I began writing this post. I’ve been on the hunt for a fitted, striped top I could tuck into my skirts but also pair with my skinny jeans and flats. This top is exactly what I was looking for, and I love the little bow detail on the sleeves! It’ll work great for fall and even chillier winter days, as a colorful cardigan would work great with it too!

2.) A Mustard-Colored Bag
Guess what’s on its way to my closet? This mustard-colored bag! I already own the teal version of it. And I had mentioned in last week’s post that this color was recently restocked. Well, I couldn’t think of a more perfect bag for fall. So, I ordered this one too! (Thank you for all the feedback, everyone!) I also own those tan, T-strap heels pictured too – they are fantastic!

3.) Burgundy Bottoms
While I’m a big fan of mustard colored things for fall, boy oh boy does burgundy also make my heart race! Whether it’s a burgundy colored midi skirt or pair of pants…I can’t think of a better color bottom this time of year.

4.) Knee-High, Zip-Up Boots
Now, I don’t have this exact pair of boots. (I have a really old pair that looks nearly identical, though. Click here to see an outfit featuring them.) I’ve been wearing them for 6 or 7 falls and winter…and I don’t see them going anywhere anytime soon! Knee-high, zip-up boots are easy to pair with a ton of outfits, from dresses and skirts to skinny jeans and leggings.

5.) Disk Earrings
I love disk earrings for this time of year because they make a wonderful statement all on their own, but you can also pair them with a chunky scarf and don’t have to worry about them getting snagged (like chandelier earrings). This style of earring is really versatile and beautiful, in my opinion.

6.) Chunky, Knit Scarves
The best purchase I made last year for fall was my chunky knit scarf! (You can see it here.) It’s so cozy and warm and works for so many different occasions. It’s easy to wear with a ton of different outfits…it even worked great as a way to stay warm while I hiked through Peru. I also like how well it pairs with my wine colored trench coat (below). This is a cute yet practical purchase that will last a long time.

7.) Trench Coat
The best part about fall is getting to wear trench coats! Gosh, do I love a good trench coat. The one pictured above I’ve had for about 4 years now. I LOVE it. Admittedly, it is a bit on the warm side. So, save it for brisker fall days. (I can wear this in Wisconsin winters paired with my scarf and a sweater.) If you’re looking to wear burgundy bottoms, though, you might want to check out the black version of it, here.

8.) Black Beret
I’ve become a quite the beret fanatic over the last year. I always thought I wasn’t French enough to pull one off. But once I actually tried one on, I realized what I’ve been missing all these years. They’re great for fall, as they aren’t going to be as warm as a good ole stocking cap. But, if you’re not convinced on adding a beret to your wardrobe, check out this versatile, black beanie, here.

9.) A Good Ole Cardigan
I wear this cardigan ALL year-long, not just in fall. But this is really the season it was made for. I’m convinced it can work with every single skirt, dress, pair of pants and jeans I have in my closet, haha. (I should do a post one day with all the different ways I’ve styled this cardigan!) It’s also held up incredibly well. I’ve had it for 5 years, and it still looks nice…despite the constant wearing and washing.

10.) A Shirt Dress
Shirt dresses are the best things since sliced bread in my opinion. They’re incredibly easy to style…you can wear just about any type of shoe with them (including sneakers), and they look great! Get a sleeved shirt dress for fall and winter, or break out a sleeveless one and pair it with a cardigan. They can be worn all year-long!

Honorable Mention:
A Trusty Pair of Black Flats
I wear black flats all year long too, but they are also fantastic addition for fall.
What do you consider your wardrobe essentials for fall? Let me know in the comments!
Great picks! Preppy, chic, and smart! I would also like a burgundy skirt. I think it’ll pair beautifully with blush tops. I’ve had a mustard bag in falls past and used it a ton. It’s amazing how versatile mustard is with other fall hues like navy, burgundy, dark green, and neutrals. And I have my eye on a beret too. I’m also looking at those new ponytail holders that have a big bow attached to dress up your pony. I think I’ll be picking up a few of those to keep my lazy day dos’ still feeling cute!

Those ponytail holders make me want to try to grow my hair out again! They’re so cute. I really want that burgundy skirt too, haha. Thank you, Liz!
My favorite 3/4 sleeve striped shirt just got ruined in the wash and I immediately went out and bought a new one!! haha. Great list. I’ve been eyeing that modcloth bag but I recently picked one up in the sale!

Haha! Thank you! Hope you have a lovely weekend too.
Stripped and plaid skirts will be the best! Love your picks!
Thanks!
That’s a great idea Lindsey! I honestly want so bad to skip the hot summer days and go to cool fall days. So I think you are on right time! Love the colors you chose for the outfits by the way 🙂
Thank you so much! Haha, glad it’s not just me. 🙂
I’m not ready to let go of summer yet, but I will always say yes to a striped top and a shirt dress:)
Can never go wrong with those! 😉
I love these wardrobe staples. They really are perfect for fall. I am starting to get really ready for fall too.
Thank you, Courtney!
Look at you staying ahead of the curve! Love these photo selections.
Thank you so much, Joanna!
No!!! I’m not ready yet. I still have too many cute summer tops to wear and I love the fact i’m not freezing. The thing is I don’t have any control over the weather, so I guess i’ll be happy with whatever it brings me!!
XOXO
