10 of the Greatest Human Inventions That Changed the World

A number of human inventions changed things so much for us as a species that our lives changed drastically as a result. In a recent message board discussion, users named their top picks for the most important human inventions. What would you add to the list?

“Its not an invention but the process of identifying them and making little pills so we dont die from a bladder infection or a rotten tooth or have a handy helper after a complicated surgery – we would die so easy without it!,” explains one user.

One could argue that humanity would never have come so far with civilization without the invention of the wheel. It allowed people to transport large quantities of supplies and travel more efficiently.

Language

One commenter says, “Without language and writing, all these other great inventions would be lost and forgotten over and over. Humanity learns and invents but also teaches, so we don’t have to learn it again.”

Plumbing

Thank heavens, we don’t have to deal with outhouses or chamber pots anymore, right? One commenter says, “I’m still amazed that I can press a button on the toilet and the contents of the toilet magically goes somewhere I don’t have to deal with it!”

Agriculture

“It’s what kicked off that whole ‘civilization’ thingy, which has led to quite a few other neat things,” says one user. Prior to the ability to cultivate crops, humans were mainly nomadic hunter-gatherers, never staying in one place for long. Agriculture allowed humans to stay in one place and develop more advanced societies.

Flying

“Still blows my mind on how it works,” says one user. It seems strange that a heavy metal object can seemingly levitate off the ground and glide through the air. It’s what has allowed people to travel to areas farther than ever before and experience new cultures.

The Internet

One commenter says, “Long-term the internet will pull out ahead of any of those simply due to how much progress it will facilitate on every future invention. Global instantaneous sharing of information is a catalyst that has already made significant improvements to our ability to improve our own technology and will only continue to grow exponentially from here.”

Refrigeration

It’s hard to imagine life before refrigeration. Preserving your food through canning, drying, or fermentation was time-consuming and limiting. Thankfully, we can enjoy a wide range of foods now thanks to the refrigerator and freezer.

One cannot understate the convenience of washing machines and dryers when you compare them to old-school washing techniques. The washer boards, soaking your hands in the harsh soaps, and the hang-drying with clothes pins…no thank you!

Electricity

Even though technically electricity always existed in the world (think about lighting!), the invention of harnessing it and channeling it into things like lights and appliances changed everything. Our lives would simply not be the same without it!
