There are more than 100 stores across the United States with quite a few more opening this year. Uptown Cheapskate is happy to purchase your gently used clothing, handbags, and accessories.
You can get cash for your clothes, or you can trade them in for credit (25% more than their cash value) so that you can shop. Your store credit is good for three years. Turn the clothes that you loved last season into a fresh new wardrobe that you want today!
Poshmark
Feel like shopping for second hand treasures right from your phone? Then look no further than Poshmark! You can shop at Poshmark from your laptop, tablet, or phone and search for your favorite designers, brands, and styles.
You can also sell clothes, shoes, accessories, and home decor you no longer love on the app as well. Simply take a picture of your items and load them on the website. When they sell, Poshmark will send you a prepaid shipping label and deposit your cash! (This is my personal favorite site to sell my clothing online!)
Buffalo Exchange
Buffalo Exchange is a brick and mortar second hand clothing exchange and thrift store similar to Plato’s Closet. They are now a chain with over 40 locations in the United States but started with a single store in Tucson, Arizona. Their mission is simple: they want to provide amazing fashion in an ethical, sustainable, and responsible way.
Visit their website to find a location near you, set up an appointment, and bring in the clothes you no longer want or need in your closet. You can trade your clothes for cash on the spot, or you can trade your old clothes for “new” ones in the store.
ThredUp
ThredUP is an online consignment and thrift store, so you can shop with them anytime from anywhere. You can find some amazing deals on the app, with beautiful clothes in great condition and at great prices. They have clothing for men, women, and children as well as maternity clothes, accessories, purses, and shoes. There are lots of different categories to shop from including a new with tags category.
Need to make a little room in your closet before you can shop? Not a problem! ThredUP will take care of selling them for you. Mercari is an online marketplace where you can buy and sell clothing, shoes, and other items from around your home that you no longer need. Mercari is not just for women’s clothing, it’s for anything that you find cluttering your home or garage that you can sell. Mercari is a great option if you are going through your home for spring cleaning and decluttering.
To sell on Mercari you will need to create an account, take a photo of your item, and upload them to the site. Once your item has been sold you are asked to ship it to the buyer within three days. As soon as the buyer receives the item you will be paid the same day.
Swap
Swap is a huge online thrift store where you can buy gently used clothes, shoes, and accessories for the whole family at incredible prices. There is always something new to buy because they upload 25,000 new items every day!
You can also sell your gently used clothing and clothes that maybe your kids have outgrown. Simply box it up and place the prepaid shipping label on it. Swap will go through the items, and acceptable items will be placed on the website to sell. You can receive your payment for sold items as a store credit, or via PayPal. Note that Swap does not pay out as well as some of these other places like Plato’s Closet, but if you are looking to clear out your closets of outgrown children’s clothing or non-designer brands it is a good option.
The RealReal
If the clothes you are buying or want to sell are high end luxury and designer brands then The RealReal is the shopping and selling platform that you are looking for. You can shop with confidence because all of the items sold on the site are authenticated. The site offers everything from children’s clothing to fine jewelry and items for your home.
This is my favorite site for buying secondhand luxury items. I’ve bought everything from Tory Burch Sandals to Gucci and Dolce & Gabbanna dresses. The RealReal rocks!
If you want to sell on the site you will need to download the app and set up an account. You can schedule a pick-up, ship, or in a few instances drop off the items that you would like to sell. After your items have been authenticated the site does everything else for you from photos to pricing and listing. When your items sell you will receive a check, direct deposit, or store credit based on the option that you have chosen.
Crossroads Trading
Crossroads Trading is very similar to Plato’s Closet with a trendier twist, as they only buy and sell on-trend or currently fashionable clothing. The clothing must be freshly laundered and in excellent condition. Most of the Crossroads Trading brick and mortar locations are on the west coast, but new branches open all the time.
You can still sell your on-trend men’s and women’s clothing to Crossroads Trading, you will just have to do it by mail. Request a bag with a prepaid UPS shipping label, place your clothing inside of it, and send it to them.
Note: that their current processing time is approximately four weeks. Once they have examined your clothing they will cash app you 30% of the value through Zelle, or you can accept 50% of the value in store credit. Online shopping is not currently offered but may be available soon.
ASOS Marketplace
